When I saw a post on Sadhbh’s blog Where Wishes Come From about why she loves living in her home town and decided to create the link up #livewhereyoulive for other bloggers to join in I knew that I had to write a post about why I love living in Glasgow.
“I belong to Glasgow,
Dear old Glasgow town;
But what’s the matter wi’ Glasgow,
For it’s goin’ roun’ and roun’!
I’m only a common old working chap,
As anyone here can see,
But when I get a couple o’ drinks on a Saturday,
Glasgow belongs to me!”
The lyrics above come from a song by Will Fyfe who wrote it after helping out a drunk who said “The way I feel tonight is that Glasgow belongs to me”.
I don’t feel that Glasgow belongs to me but rather I belong to Glasgow. I simply could not imagine living anywhere else. I am proud to have been born and bred in this city.
I consider myself to be fiercely patriotic and I long for the day that Scotland has its own voice and freedom to be heard in this world but that is for another post!
Glasgow to me … is just a wonderful city. Although we are not the capital city of Scotland I feel that we are somewhat superior than our rivals Edinburgh. Glasgow has been voted the 2nd best for shopping outside London and if you take a wander along Buchanan Street you will see why! We also have 2 Primarks in the city centre fyi!
World class music artists flock to the city and always remark about how amazing the Scottish crowds are. We have a fantastic new music arena the SSE Hydro where we have hosted the MOBO’s and other glityz music award. There are also world class football stadiums for bands to play in. You really cannot beat the atmosphere of an outdoor concert!
I was so proud of Glasgow for hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games. There was an amazing atmosphere around the city and it was so nice to see the athletes mingling around the city center. The opening ceremony was outstanding and really put Glasgow on the map!
I love the fact that we are only 1 hrs drive away from stunning scenery and one of my favourite places … Loch Lomond. You really feel that you are a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
There is always something to do in Glasgow. Whether you want to spend a few hours in one of the many parks reading a good book or wandering around one of the many museums that offer free entry. I guarantee that you will not be bored.
Glasgow has amazing nightlife. Whilst I am sad to admit that my clubbing days are over there are so many restaurants and bars to choose from with a wide range of culinary delights that I do not feel I am missing out.
People will always pass the time of day with you in Glasgow. Whether its the old lady at the bus stop or the gentleman on the bus who starts blethering away to you. Guarantee you will end up putting the world to rights and nearly miss your stop!
The motto of the city is “People Make Glasgow” and I am so proud to say “I belong to Glasgow”!
