I remember the week after I received my diagnosis so clearly. It was the Wednesday and I woke up in the morning and suddenly burst into tears and they just wouldn’t stop.
I didn’t know who to turn to and I began googling cancer support sites online and came across Macmillan Cancer Support. I picked up the phone and spoke to a lovely switchboard operator who sat and listened to me through my tears. There was no rush … “Take all the time you need” she said, and I did.
Two and a half hours later I had spoken to various member of the Macmillan team, I had been referred for counselling, financial support and support with dealing with work.
It felt like a load had been lifted off of my shoulders. I also spoke with one of the nurse advisors who was able to answer some questions about my diagnosis and the surgery and treatment that I was facing.
I was very lucky to be awarded a Macmillan grant to be able to afford travel expenses back and forward to the hospital which was a 100 mile round trip!
Macmillan’s mission is that no one should face cancer alone and in order to achieve this they rely heavily on fundraising and donations from the public.
This year on September 30th Macmillan are hosting a worldwide coffee morning and the lovely people over at Brantano Footwear are joining in the fun by hosting their very own coffee morning.
Brantano stores up and down the country will be opening their doors at 9am inviting shoppers in to enjoy delicious cakes and refreshments whilst raising vital funds. The total amount raised by the coffee morning events in 2015 was well over £25 million!
Karen Stanton of Brantano say’s …
“The coffee morning initiative has grown and grown to be the biggest in the world, and it is a privilege to be involved in this remarkable fundraising event. It is for an amazing cause and we invite everyone to come into our stores, meet the staff, enjoy some lovely cake and help us raise as much money as we can”
Brantano aims to raise £40,000 for Macmillan this year which is their chosen charity. With stores across the UK Brantano offers a range of footwear to suit all tastes and budgets. Brantano offers a unique shopping experience, with shoes displayed by size in pairs for ease of trying on. All in store “fitters” are trained to a high standard by brands such as Clarks, Hush Puppies and Start Right.
If you are passing by then I please urge you to go in and have some cake and leave a small donation.
Macmillan are a truly wonderful charity and I personally would have been lost without their support.
If you or someone you know needs Macmillan’s support then their free support line is open Monday – Friday 9am to 8pm.
The number is 0808 808 00 00.
There’s also a fantastic online support network with information about all different types of cancer and treatments and message boards where you can chat to people with similar experiences.
Will you be supporting the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning this year?
